About Me

My parents used to run an ice cream shop in an odd neighborhood. It was not a particularly successful venture. But in that shop were all kinds of strange figures.

I was a small kid, no older than 7 or 8, and I would look up at these tall and odd folk. In this shop were customers so peculiar. Vulgar, refined, loud, soft-spoken, brash, gentle, all with strange stories to tell.

In my mind, this is what design is: listening to the stories of the odd folk of this world. Because we are all odd folk with odd stories.

The Box

This visual system is primarily defined by a flexible box. The box can rotate and change its dimensions, reflecting evolving perspectives and ideas.

I created various p5.js tools which enabled me to use these graphic elements throughout the identity.

Flexible Type

Accompanying the box is a flexible type system. In a similar way to the box, the letters can stretch to fit any dimensions or container.

Points & Procedures

Description

Points & Procedures is an exhibition focusing on six artists who use code to create art.

The visual system revolves around a set of letters, built using the JavaScript library p5.js, and evocative of pen plotter drawings.

The Mechanics of Film

The visual system is inspired by the mechanics of filmmaking. The logo itself simulates the effect of an expanding and contracting aperture.

This shape is employed throughout the system, in some cases taking on a glass material and distorting the imagery beneath it, breaking light into different wavelengths of color.

Catalog

The catalog extends the Academy Museum’s identity into print, using circular forms, distortions, and gradients to reflect the language of filmmaking. The catalog includes a history of the museum, permanent collections, and highlighted creators.

Friendly but Firm

I designed Geo to bridge the authoritative voice of grotesques and the warmth and approachability of geometric fonts.

Compared to typical grotesques, Geo employs a low x-height and slightly more circular geometry. Geo uses a double-story ‘a’ and ‘g’ to aid legibility and contribute to its reliable voice.
