Academy Museum

Description

The Academy Museum is the largest museum in the United States devoted to the arts, sciences, and culture of moviemaking. This rebrand positions the Academy Museum as a space where history, artistry, and innovation intersect.

This project explores the intersection of generative design, interaction, and visual systems. Through a series of custom-built tools and prototypes, the work transforms the Academy Museum of Motion Picture’s brand identity into an expansive and dynamic visual system.

The Mechanics of Film

The visual system is inspired by the mechanics of filmmaking. The logo itself simulates the effect of an expanding and contracting aperture.

The variable circle lens is employed throughout the system, in some cases taking on a glass material and distorting the imagery beneath it, breaking light into different wavelengths of color.

Catalog

The catalog extends the Academy Museum’s identity into print, using circular forms, distortions, and gradients to reflect the language of filmmaking. The catalog includes a history of the museum, permanent collections, and highlighted creators.
