Description
The de Young is a fine arts museum in San Francisco that showcases a wide range of art from across the world. Connecting the past, present, and future, the museum presents art spanning various cultures and time periods.
This rebrand expands on de Young’s original concept of “seeing art from a new perspective” through a visual system centered around a transformable box which shifts in size, orientation, and dimension.

The Box
This visual system is primarily defined by a flexible box. The box can rotate and change its dimensions, reflecting evolving perspectives and ideas.
I created various p5.js tools which enabled me to use these graphic elements throughout the identity.
Flexible Type
Accompanying the box is a flexible type system. In a similar way to the box, the letters can stretch to fit any dimensions or container.
Color
The bright red draws inspiration from fresh copper, which has a radiant quality. As copper oxidizes, it gradually turns a cold blue. The contrast between fresh and aged copper symbolizes the connection between past and present. Stories are shaped and interpreted through the lens of time.
